Short version: if the work happens in one day, hire a crew. If it stretches across a week or more, rent the dumpster. Everything else is detail.
The cost comparison people don't run correctly
A 10-yard roll-off in Broward County typically runs $300–$450 for a week, and a 20-yard runs $450–$650, with weight overage charged beyond an included tonnage. A half-truck junk removal job runs about $550 and a full truck about $900.
On the sticker, the dumpster wins. The comparison is wrong, though, because the dumpster price doesn't include the labor — and the labor is the actual job. You're comparing a container to a finished outcome.
| Factor | Roll-off dumpster | Junk removal crew |
|---|---|---|
| Who loads it | You | Us |
| Time on your property | 3–7 days | 2–4 hours |
| Permit | Often required for street or swale placement | None |
| Driveway risk | Real — cracking and staining are common | None |
| Weight limits | Overage billed after the fact | Quoted upfront |
| Donation sorting | Nothing is donated | Usable items diverted |
| Neighbors and HOA | Visible for days, often regulated | Gone the same day |
Rent a dumpster when
- You're doing a multi-week renovation and debris is generated continuously.
- You genuinely want to sort slowly over several days.
- You have the physical ability and the time, and would rather spend a weekend than the money.
- The volume is large enough that multiple truckloads would cost more than a container.
Hire a crew when
- You want the garage empty today, not eventually.
- Anything heavy is involved — appliances, safes, treadmills, sectionals.
- You physically can't do the lifting, or shouldn't.
- Your HOA restricts containers, or your driveway can't take one.
- You want donatable items to go somewhere useful instead of a landfill.
- The project is a single defined job with a beginning and an end.
Two things people underestimate
The permit. Placing a roll-off on a Cooper City street or swale generally requires a permit from the city. Placing it on your own driveway usually doesn't, but your HOA may have its own rules about how long a container can sit visible. Check both before you book, not after it's delivered.
The driveway. A loaded 20-yard roll-off is heavy, and it's delivered and retrieved by a truck that has to maneuver on your slab. Cracked pavers and oil staining are common enough that reputable rental companies make you sign a waiver for it. Plywood under the rails helps and is worth insisting on.
The honest recommendation
For a single garage, a crew is almost always the better call — a garage cleanout is a one-day job by nature, and paying for a week-long container to do a three-hour task is a poor trade. For a kitchen gut that runs three weeks, rent the dumpster.
We'll tell you which one your job is if you call and describe it, including when the answer is the dumpster. We'd rather give away one job than take one we're the wrong tool for.
