You do not need to sort your garage before we get there. That's the job. But there are about twenty minutes of prep that make the day faster, and one or two things worth checking so you don't lose something you wanted.
Do this (20 minutes)
- Pull the keepers out. The tools you actually use, the holiday bins, the two boxes that matter — move them into the house or to one clearly separated corner. Ambiguity is what slows a walkthrough down, and it's the only way something gets taken that shouldn't be.
- Open the boxes you can't identify. Not all of them. Just the unlabeled ones. Paperwork, photographs, and small valuables end up in unmarked boxes more often than in labeled ones.
- Check pockets, bags, and luggage. Jewelry, cash, and spare keys live in coat pockets and old purses.
- Look inside any freezer or fridge that's going. Both for contents and for anything stored there deliberately — an entire generation kept valuables in kitchen appliances.
- Separate hazardous items into one visible spot. Paint, solvents, oil, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane tanks. We can't haul them, and having them grouped saves time.
- Clear the driveway. We need truck access close to the garage door. Move cars, bikes, and the basketball hoop.
- Sort out gate access. If you're in a gated community, add us to the visitor list and tell us if a certificate of insurance is required — several Cooper City and Weston communities want one on file.
Don't bother with this
- Don't bag or box things "to make it easier." It doesn't. It makes it heavier and it hides what's inside. Loose is fine.
- Don't break down furniture. That's our job and we have the tools for it.
- Don't drag things to the curb. You're paying for us to carry it. Hurting your back to save us ninety seconds is a bad trade.
- Don't pre-clean. The slab gets swept when it's empty. Cleaning a floor you can't see is wasted effort.
- Don't sort donatable from disposable. We do that as we load, and we're better at guessing what a donation partner will accept.
Decide in advance about the shelving
This is the one question that stalls a walkthrough. Wall shelving, overhead racks, workbenches, and cabinets can come out or stay — but understand what removal looks like: anchor holes, disturbed paint, sometimes a bit of drywall damage where a rack was lagged into a stud. That's normal and unavoidable.
If you're planning to epoxy the floor or rebuild the storage anyway, take it all out. If the shelving is fine and you just want the clutter gone, leave it and save the time.
Set expectations with whoever else lives there
The most common source of friction on cleanout day isn't the crew — it's a spouse or an adult child arriving mid-job to discover something is on the truck. Have that conversation the night before. Anything contested goes in the "stays" corner until it's settled.
What the day actually looks like
We arrive in your two-hour window, walk the garage with you, and give you the final price in writing. You approve it. Two people carry everything out while you do whatever you want. Usable items get set aside for donation. We sweep the slab, show you the empty room, and take the balance. A two-car garage is generally two to three hours from knock to gone.
